Wichita Chiropractor Dr. Tracy Alan Norris is a Certified Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT®) Clinician trained to perform pre-surgical spine screenings and provide conservative intervention. According to Dr. Norris, every patient with significant back or neck pain should be pre-screened with an MDT® assessment to determine whether the condition is related to a mechanical, musculoskeletal condition prior to surgery.

Several research studies have shown the potential of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) for pre-surgical screening and intervention to reduce surgery rates in the spine. In one study, four years after implementation of McKenzie based spine clinics in a Danish county, lumbar disc surgery rates were reduced by 50% compared with previous years. In another study, transforaminal epidural injections followed by MDT® demonstrated the potential to be an effective strategy in preventing surgical interventions for patients with lumbar disc herniation.

Primary care physicians and surgeons have the opportunity to be able to use MDT assessment, diagnosis and treatment methods in their practice or use the knowledge to understand when and who to refer back pain patients to for the best possible outcomes for the patient. Except for "red flag" cases, every spinal patient should be screened with a mechanical evaluation prior to surgery to determine whether there is a mechanical, musculoskeletal problem that conservative care might help prior to advancing towards a surgical intervention.

Results may vary as each case and each provider is different. For the best possible outcomes in mechanical cases, examination by a  certified MDT® provider is highly suggested.
